Differences Between REALTORS® and Real Estate Agents: Why You Should Hire a REALTOR®

Buying or selling a property can be a complex and time-consuming process, and having the right professional to guide you through the process can make all the difference.  While many people use the terms "realtor" and "real estate agent" interchangeably, the simple truth is that they are very different.  All REALTORS® are real estate agents, but not all real estate agents are REALTORS®.  Additionally, the title of REALTOR® is a registered trademark, and real estate agents that are not members of The National Association of REALTORS® cannot refer to themselves as such.  In this blog, we'll discuss the benefits of choosing a REALTOR® over a real estate agent.

  1. Code of Ethics and Professional Standards:  REALTORS® are members of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) and must adhere to a strict code of ethics and professional standards.  This code requires REALTORS® to be honest and transparent in their dealings with clients and other real estate professionals and to avoid misprepresentation.  The Code of Ethics is divided into three major sections:  "Duties to Clients and Customers", "Duties to the Public", and "Duties to REALTORS®".  All REALTORS® are required to adhere to the Code of Ethics in all business dealings.
  2. Access to MLS and Other Tools:  REALTORS® have access to the Mulitple Listing Service (MLS), which is a database of properties that are for sale.  This gives them access to information about properties that may not be available to the general public.  REALTORS® also have access to other tools and resources that can help them market properties, provide statistical data and property reports, and help them find potential buyers.
  3. Negotiation Skills:  REALTORS® are trained in negotiation skills and can help their clients get the best deal possible.  Whether you're buying or selling a property, a REALTOR® can help you negotiate the terms of the sale and ensure that your interests are protected.
  4. Market Knowledge:  REALTORS® have a deep understanding of the local real estate market (geographical competence) and can help you navigate the complexities of buying or selling a property.  They can provide valuable insights into pricing trends, the availability of properties, and other factors that may impact your decision.
  5. Network of Professionals:  REALTORS® have a network of professionals that they can tap into to help their clients.  This includes mortgage brokers, home inspectors, contractors, and other professionals that can help you throughout the buying or selling process.
  6. Support Throughout the Process:  Buying or selling a property can be a stressful and ovewhelming experience.  REALTORS® provide their clients with support throughout the process, from helping them find the right property to closing the deal.  They can also any questions you may have and provide guidance and advice as needed.  If certain questions don't fall within their area of expertise and require an answer from a separate licensed individual (i.e.: taxes, legal questions, mortgage loan details, etc...), they will be able to refer you to the appropriate licensed professional to answer those questions.
  7. Continuing Education:  REALTORS® are required to continually renew their Code of Ethics and MLS training at set intervals.  This helps ensure that your REALTOR® is refreshed and up to date on changes that may have occurred in the interim.

While real estate agents can provide valuable services, working with a REALTOR® offers a number of additional benefits.  REALTORS® are held to a higher standard of professionalism, have access to valuable tools and resources, and can provide valuable insights into the local real estate market.  If you're buying or selling a property, working with a REALTOR® can help you achieve your goals more quickly and with greater peace of mind.
